I don't know what those images are from, but the description of mise-en-scene sounds like it could also be applicable to Dario Argento. Except I would replace "human concepts" with "human conventions." Great quote.

Hi Daniel - these images are from Rivette's Noroît, with Geraldine Chaplin and Bernadette Lafont warming up for the final balletic duel(le).

Do you like "Noroît"? Loving and admiring, up to then, Rivette, I was quite worried in '78 or so when I first saw both this and "Duelle". Almost 30 years after, when the DVDs came out, I love "Duelle" very much but find "Noroît hopelessly dead.

Miguel, I must confess that of the two, I prefer Duelle, perhaps for the company of Berto/Ogier/Karagheuz. Noroît at times strikes me as a more pure documentary form of Duelle and a record of its own creative energy and its dramatic dissipation, as a recording of the reactions of an assembled crowd of actors to improvisation (and there usually is a crowd for the scenes in French dialogue) - promenade theater taken to extremes. Contrary to being dead, I think there is much, too much at play here! (its mythic/cinephilic leanings, the choreography, the sound design (I will never forget the squeaking sound of Lafont's pink leather pants), and the apparent existence of certain scenes solely for the sake of making use of the material world surrounding the castle: Chaplin's and Balsan's outdoor encounter in the wind, for instance). It is a difficult film to defend because, as David Ehrenstein has written (as it appears at The Order of the Exile, I think, and something that I grossly paraphrase), it may be beyond measurement. But I cannot deny the terrifying nature of its images and sounds, and the phantom narrative that can barely contain them.

Have you seen recently "Merry-Go-Round"? Seems no one likes it at all, not even Rivette, while for me its the greatest of his films together with "Paris nous appartient". I've just seen it once more, and I think this is the truly successful "scènes de la vie parallèle".

Yes, I think Merry-Go-Round is definitely underrated and equally as fascinating (esp. in those final scenes)as the earlier ones, though I must see it again now that I know you regard it as one of his greatest.
